isPermaLink="false">http://photographyminute.com/?p=2372#comment-5370

We have nearly 100 house finch at our feeder and beginning 2 days ago (Sept 10, 2011) they all started puffing up... the males began puffing out their red chests.. the females puffed up like the one in your photo... they also began making dramatic 20-30 foot dives from the nearby pine tree.. I mean, straight down, wings back, nose aimed straight for the ground like a missile in reverse! I'm pretty sure this is mate-seeking behavior.. the males dive and make impressive swoooops to a perch, the females check him out and decide if he's right for her... when they pair, the male will bring her a single twig, almost like a wedding ring, and she'll go off and begin building the nest... these birds are the most fascinating and adorable darlings.. but they're being devastated by avian flu... many, many birds we've seen have the tell-tale lesions or food stuck to their faces... it's heartbreaking

We have nearly 100 house finch at our feeder and beginning 2 days ago (Sept 10, 2011) they all started puffing up… the males began puffing out their red chests.. the females puffed up like the one in your photo… they also began making dramatic 20-30 foot dives from the nearby pine tree..
