Tracie and I got up early and headed out to Penn Farm in the Cedar Hill State Park in Cedar Hill TX.
I’d heard about the farm from a coworker and decided to check it out. I was especially excited since I’ve yet to try out my new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
lenses.
Penn Farm is a historic farm with tons of old barns, farm equipment and a few old houses. The ‘official’ description from the State Park website is:
Penn Farm Agricultural History Center pays tribute to the disappearing Texas’ family farm and affords a glimpse into agrarian history as farm machinery took the place of the horse and mule almost a century ago. The Farm is open 7 days a week to self-guided tours. There are reconstructed and historic buildings from the mid 1800s through the mid 1900s. The Penn Farm has a very relaxing atmosphere and is perfect for family walks. Self-guided and guided tours are available. Special tours can be set-up for school groups or other groups. The farm is really great…tons of history there. I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma and can remember my grandparents having a lot of the same types of old machinery and equipment…lots of memories for me while walking around the farm grounds.
The day was very overcast which played havoc with my amateur abilities…but I think its worth sharing a few pics anyway. I didn’t get a chance to use the 17-40 but got to play with the 24-105 quite a bit.
I feel as though these pictures are more snapshots than photographs…but I’m working on that.
A few pics with the 24-105 are below.

From Inside Out - view from inside a barn at Penn Farm - Taken with Canon 5D, 24-105mm @ 24mm, f/8.0, 1/25, ISO 400. Enhanced with Kubota's Dragon Old World Action.
About half-way through the farm tour, I switched over to me trusty Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM lens. We were seeing a lot of cardinals and woodpeckers so I thought I’d throw the big lens on to get some good bird pics. But…i never saw another bird after putting on the 100-400!!! That’s the way it goes I guess!
A few shots with my 100-400mm are below.
