While out scouting for our new Great Horned Owl friend (see photo and video), I heard a ruckus across the creek and noticed this hawk fighting with another hawk.
The 2nd hawk left and this Red-Tailed Hawk landed on a nice perch. This is a pretty good crop from original but I think it crops well.
Captured with Canon 7D and Canon 400mm 5.6 L sitting on my Induro CT314 Tripod.

That looks like a red-shouldered hawk.
Thanks…I’ve had three different people tell me three different types of Hawks
Red-Shouldered, Broad-winged and Red-Tailed. I don’t know what to think anymore….I’ve looked at all three and can see similarities in all of them.
Perched Buteos can be tough,especially from just one angle. I’d expect a ‘Tail to show something of a belly band, which I don’t see here. ‘Shoulders usually show uniform streaking all down the breast. They also tend to show a bit of an eye line and well, more red on the shoulder. The graded streaking on the breast, the solid head pattern and the bits of white on the “shoulder” all seem consistent with Broad-winged to me. If it’d just take off then we could tell for sure…
Thanks Jim! I’ve had another person point me at the Broad Winged Hawk…he sees them often and swears that this is a Broad.

That sounds like it! We might have a winner!
The call is unmistakable. We’ve got a pair that nests nearby and from time to time they and the local Red-tails scream at each other over our yard. Of course “our” Broad-wings are far south of here now.
I listened to the calls that BirdChick pointed me too…they are definitely unmistakable.
