I’m a fairly inexperienced photographer (surprised?) and am always learning more about the field.
I’ve always heard about photographers being hassled while taking pictures but didn’t realize it was as bad as being hassled while standing on a public sidewalk taking photographs of buildings.
The folks over at discarted – life captured have recently posted a few stories about being hassled while taking pictures. The most recent issue came when they were in Downtown LA photographing various buildings and were set upon by the US Bank building’s security team.
Read more about their encounter at “Wasting Breath” with US Bank Tower’s Security Team and US Bank Tower: The Aftermath. Some really great reporting on the incident. Thomas Hawk also has commentary and a video on the US Bank Tower issue in the blog post titled Video Footage of US Bank Tower Security Guards Harassing and Threatening Photographers.
A few months ago I picked up a book titled Legal Handbook for Photographers: The Rights and Liabilities of Making Images but hadn’t started reading it yet…but after reading the stories about the photographers at the US Bank, I think I’ll pick it up and figure out my basic rights at least.
