Kingfisher at White Rock Lake, Dallas

I visited the spillway at White Rock Lake with my new (to me) Canon 1D Mark III and Canon 400mm 5.6 L + Canon 1.4x Extender siting on my Induro CT314 Tripod.

I caught this Kingfisher flying around and finally got a decent shot. This is a fairly large crop…best I could do.

We went over to the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center’s First Saturday event. They have quite a few birds of prey and are opening a center about 3 miles from the house. Woohoo

I captured this red-tailed hawk portrait during one of the programs. Captured with Canon 7D and Canon 400mm 5.6 L handheld.

Little Blue Heron – Village Creek Drying Beds

Here’s a shot of a Little Blue Heron from the Village Creek Drying Beds in Arlington TX. Captured with Canon 7D with Canon 400mm 5.6 L with Canon 2X Extender sitting on my Induro CT314 Tripod.

The photo isn’t quite as sharp as I’d like (the extender and my inability to manually focus) but its an interesting bird worth sharing.

Great Horned Owl – Birding in Dallas

Great day birding today!

We found a Great Horned Owl and got some good shots…I’m excited as this is bird has been on my ‘must see’ list forever.Tracie and I went out looking for birds to photograph this morning and ran across this Great Horned Owl around the Breckenridge Park area of Richardson TX.

MooseNewsBlog (run by the one and only Moose Peterson) is having a contest.

Contest Rules:

The subject is nesting birds, deadline is 30 June, 2009. The rules are pretty darn simple.
Gotta have a really nice photo of a nesting bird with young. Just sitting on the nest or adult with eggs will not qualify.
Gotta have a second photo, nothing special other than it has to demonstrate the nest successfully fledge its young.
Photos have to be taken in 2009
Can be from anywhere on this planet

Sparrows, Grackle and a House Finch

Spent some time in the evening practicing with my new monopod and had quite a few different types of birds visit..nothing exotic or new but I thought they were worth sharing. Nothing spectacular but fun shooting nonetheless.

Photowalk at the Heard Museum

Tracie (blog & website) and I went up to the Heard Museum in McKinney TX on Saturday. We’d been itching to get some birding and wildlife photos in the Heard is always a good place for that.

We were a bit disappointed…wasn’t much going on there on Saturday. Very few birds and no wildlife at all. We did see some cranes, American Coot‘s, Yellow-rumped Warbler‘s and a few Lesser Scaup‘s…but all in all it was pretty quiet.

Here’s a few pics…all taken with my Canon 5D and 100-400. Not thrilled with any of these pics but thought I’d share anyway.
